CARE AFSCME Local 17 represents approximately 630 members who work for the department of Mental Retardation in 52 group homes spread throughout western Massachusetts. The area served encompasses homes from Ware to Stockbridge/Lee. Before going to a community based service, the Local was located on the campus of the Belchertown State School. Job titles covered include MRW I, II and LPN's.
Each member receives annually a calendar of the monthly membership meetings place, time and date.

Regina (Gina) Collins –
Passed away on July 30th 2007
Her death was unexpected at just 50 years-
She worked for DMR for many years as a MRW 11
Gina was the Secretary for local 17
She attended the Annual SUMMUP Convention in June of this year
She had expressed that she had a wonderful learning experience while
at the Convention, and thought the SUMMUP bunch was great, as she sat on her 1st committee.
She was a caring and loving person with a positive outlook on life.
She leaves her husband and 2 adult children
She is sadly missed by everyone that knew her.

FYI- Pay increase update:
On July 12th 2007 AFSCME members voted to ratify the unit 2 Contract. We are waiting for funding for this 1 year extension, which must go through the State Legislature. And, YES this 3% will be retro. Implementation of all terms will follow.
Contract Negotiations:
Contract Negotiations for a 3 year successor agreement to the recently ratified extension will commence on October 2, 2007.
Karla Mitchell, Rita Carter, Darlene Woodward are on the Negotiations team.

AFSCME Family Scholarship:
AFCSME International’s 2008 Family Scholarship is open for applications for High School seniors graduating in 2008, who are children of AFSCME members. Thirteen (13) scholarships of $2000 each will be awarded to winners, selected from applications that meet the eligibility requirements.
